Working principle

A positive-displacement plunger pump pressurizes the product; the fluid then passes through one or two homogenizing valves. In the valve, cavitation, shear and turbulence disintegrate droplets and particles. Total energy input: 2–6 kWh per m³ of product.

Single-stage vs two-stage homogenization

Single-stage valves suit particulate reduction (tomato, fruit purees, plant-based). Two-stage valves add a downstream low-pressure valve (30–50 bar) that breaks up clusters that reform after the first stage — essential for stable dairy emulsions and cream.

Pressure ranges by application

Higher pressure = smaller particles + higher stability, but also higher power draw and wear on valves and seats.

Sizing an industrial homogenizer

Sizing follows three inputs: nominal flow (l/h), working pressure (bar), and product viscosity at homogenizing temperature (cP). MCF homogenizers scale from 500 l/h laboratory units to 30 000 l/h industrial skids.

Integration with pasteurizers and UHT

Homogenization is almost always coupled with thermal treatment. Downstream layout: preheat → homogenize at 60–75 °C → pasteurize / UHT → cool → aseptic fill. Placing the homogenizer at pasteurization temperature reduces energy demand and stabilizes the emulsion under thermal stress.

Typically 200–250 bar two-stage for whole milk. Higher pressures (up to 350 bar) are used for ESL and premium cream lines to guarantee cluster-free stability across 6–9 months of ambient shelf life.

Yes, if valve seats and pressure settings are compatible. MCF sizes each unit on the most demanding product; secondary products then run at reduced pressure. A dedicated CIP cycle between products prevents cross-contamination.
